Working alone significantly increases the vulnerability of workers to the hazards of the workplace. Particular care, therefore, needs to be taken to help ensure the safety of lone workers. If a risk assessment shows that lone working is not safe, then employers must fulfil their duty of care obligations under Health and Safety regulations by taking steps to reduce the risks.

Panztel (UK) Ltd, founded in 1998, has offices in the United Kingdom , Australia , New Zealand and France . As a leading electronic monitoring service provider, Panztel offers a fully-managed service, primarily to the building, homecare, transport and security industries and currently has over 45,000 users in three continents. Panztel designed Loneworker Companion as an extension for its eziTracker mobile time-in-attendance package.

Orbis Monitoring is a leading provider of lone worker protection and was among the first to pioneer a new level of service that provides exact location techniques and 24-hour response by operators based in Cheshire . Orbis now protects thousands of lone workers in both public and private sectors.

Panztel's Loneworker Companion has been combined with the highly advanced Orbis communication hub to create Code5® Companion.

How Code5 Companion Works

  • A user-friendly schedule system enables lone workers to call the Companion service, which is accessed through their PIN.
  • The lone worker then sets a specific period of time to cover a visit or appointment where they may be at risk. Typically, the lone worker records a voice message detailing where and when he/she will be working and an expected completion time.
  • Failure by the worker to call back by the expected completion time, results in an automatic call to the worker to check for a 'false-alarm'. If the call back is unsuccessful, an alert to the Orbis 24/7 Response Centre is made where operators will respond accordingly.

'One Touch' Alert Key
  • Keys are programmed for speed dialling on mobile handsets.
  • The service can be used on landlines.
  • The 'Alarm' key is normally set on '5' as most mobiles have a raised 'pip' for identification by touch.
  • One press on an SOS-programmed key, ie the 5 key, on a mobile puts the worker straight through to the Orbis 24/7 Response centre where operators listen to incidents and take appropriate action, including, if necessary, summoning the emergency services.
